Small single-phase and three-phase inverters

For small single-phase and three-phase inverters, we see instrumentation similar to that found in microinverters, only with higher power ratings. And, of course, we see both single-phase and three-phase models among grid emulators and AC loads.

As solar panel simulators, we can use, for example, the Itech M3900C series and the IT6000C series. The M3900C series includes special models ranging from 1 to 5 kW with a maximum voltage of 150 V. The IT6000C series, on the other hand, starts at 5 kW and goes up to 18 kW as standard, with a wide range of voltages (up to 2,250 V). Both series are used in conjunction with the SAS1000 software for this application.

With this software, it is very easy to create different IV curves for various types of panels. By entering the correct values for Voc, Isc, Vmp, and Imp, the curve is generated automatically. Shading on the panel array can also be simulated. You can create specific test sequences as well as simulate dynamic lighting conditions. And here, too, of course, there’s the option to simulate batteries using bidirectional power supplies. In this case, we can use the same Itech M3900C series and IT6000C series power supplies, as well as the H&H QL series. For power ratings up to 2,400 W but where a high dynamic range is required, we can use the BP4620 from NF. If we need both a high dynamic range and high power, there are also the bidirectional power supplies from IECO’s BMPS series.

For these power ratings, we need to make an additional distinction depending on whether we are considering a single-phase inverter or a three-phase inverter, and whether we are considering an AC grid emulator or an AC load.

Of course, our suppliers have taken this into account as well. For example, all models in the higher-power range of the Itech 7900 series grid emulators are equipped with a switchable single-phase or three-phase output (Starting at 6 kVA).

This also applies to the AC loads from H&H and Itech. These AC loads can be used in both single-phase and three-phase applications.

Another advantage of the Itech IT8200 series is that it is a regenerative AC load. Power is not converted into heat; instead, it is neatly fed back into the power grid. A major advantage of this unit is that we can actually program a phase shift between voltage and current of + and -90 degrees. This is ideal for simulating capacitive and inductive loads (different power factors), which is necessary for one of the tests on the inverter.

The Itech 7900P series offers the same functionality as the 7900 series but can also operate as a regenerative AC load. In AC load mode, this unit offers the same functionality as the Itech 8200 series. This applies to power ratings starting at 2 kVA. It is, therefore, a highly flexible solution for both types of solar inverters.
