For electronic loads (in short: loads) we differentiate between AC and DC loads, like we do for power supplies. Loads are used to test energy-generating installations.
Examples of AC loads are solar inverters and UPS systems. Most AC loads have adjustable power and can operate in both Constant Current and Constant Resistance mode.
Examples of DC loads are switched power supplies, DC / DC converters, batteries, fuel cells, battery charging cables, and solar panels. The options regarding loads are Constant Current, Constant Resistance, Constant Voltage, and Constant Power. Some models are supplemented with Constant Impedance and a combination of the aforementioned possibilities.
The easiest way to test a power supply is to load the power supply with a resistive load. This way, it is easy to determine whether a power supply meets the basic specifications of voltage, current, and power. However, most resistance loads are not pure, and the power supply’s load is often dynamic instead of static. Electronic loads are often used in order to test the power supply on dynamic behavior.
How quickly does the power supply follow when a load changes from 10% to 90%? Does the power drop in case of such load, and by how much? How quickly does the power supply recover to the set voltage? What is the current’s characteristic course? These questions may be answered by applying correct electronic loads.
A multi-channel DC load is often used for the testing of, for example, PC power supplies that have both 12V, 5V and 3.3V outputs. Multichannel AC loads are generally used for testing three-phase systems.
At TTMS, we carry electronic loads to a capacity of 600KVA. Especially with these high powers, it is interesting to use regenerative loads.
Alternatively, we also carry water-cooled DC loads.
Last but not least, we carry specific loads developed for, for example, the testing of solar panels (zero volts optional) and fuel cells (low voltage and high currents).

To test these systems we have acquired two Cinergia GE/EL +120kVA eplus units capable of doing grid emulation (AC + DC), operating as an electronic load (AC +DC) and being a battery emulator.
